\u201cI\u2019m a recent nursing graduate, and I came today to look at nursing assistant positions.\u201d Zhang, a student, clutching a stack of corporate brochures, then shifted tone: \u201cBut some nursing assistant positions have age restrictions, so I\u2019m still looking for a better fit.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The reporter walked around and found that<\/span>many institutions have posted “Senior Care Assistant” job openings.<\/span>Shanghai No.1 Social Welfare Institute set the age limit at \u201cunder 50 years old\u201d, and young people were already queuing up at the booth. However, a small number of \u201cnursing assistant\u201d positions remain oriented toward experienced caregivers; on the display board of Shanghai Xingchenjia Senior Care Service Co., Ltd., the age requirement for \u201cnursing assistants\u201d is \u201c50 to 60 years old\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe consider that older nursing assistants are more skilled in their work and understand the needs of the elderly, making communication easier.\u201d But the recruiter from Xingchenjia also mentioned that besides \u201cnursing assistant\u201d, the company will gradually release positions more popular among young people, such as \u201csocial worker, HR, and senior care consultant\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBased on the training previously conducted at the base, current practitioners in related fields are relatively older,\u201d said Xiong Xinxin, project director of the Shanghai (Minhang) Senior Care Service Capacity Building Base.<\/span>As the senior care industry transforms from \u201clabor-intensive\u201d to \u201cprofessional and technology-driven,\u201d the released positions are also becoming \u201cyounger.\u201d The base has cooperated with 13 Shanghai institutions that offer senior care-related majors.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Xiao Ju said that the school subdivides nursing majors into rehabilitation, senior care, and other directions, and adjusts courses accordingly. \u201cFor example, rehabilitation students learn to use rehabilitation aids.\u201d These changes align with the current trend of nursing assistants shifting from \u201cphysical labor\u201d to \u201cprofessional roles.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Emergence of new positions<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to traditional positions like \u201cSenior Care Assistant,\u201d some companies have also introduced new roles such as Accompanied Medical Escort, Health and Senior Care Planner, and Rehabilitation Aids Rental Consultant.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the latest \u201cShanghai Vocational Skills Improvement Subsidy Catalog (2026)\u201d released by Shanghai Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, \u201cElderly Medical Escort\u201d has been included as a Category A subsidy project.<\/span>\u201cFrom registration and queuing, accompanying visits to post-care services and psychological support, the work of an escort begins and ends at the hospital.\u201d In the view of Gao Jiaxu, founder of Jiajianing, the rise of \u201cAccompanied Medical Escort\u201d stems from two demands: it can shorten the elderly\u2019s visit time through standardized processes, reduce the burden on their children, and also improve doctors\u2019 consultation efficiency.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAmong the job seekers who came to consult, there were many young people, which is a good trend,\u201d said Gao Jiaxu.<\/span>The company launched the \u201cAccompanied Medical Escort\u201d position in 2025, with salaries generally higher than the 6,000 to 7,000 yuan of most \u201cSenior Care Assistants.\u201d<\/span>As young people enter the escort industry, they can not only leverage their familiarity with hospital smart devices but also play the role of \u201ctemporary children,\u201d bringing \u201cemotional value\u201d to the elderly.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Gao Jiaxu specifically mentioned the \u201cSearch for Loved Ones\u201d service: \u201cWhen an elderly person sits in a rocking chair reminiscing about the past, if there is someone they want to thank or a first love, as long as there is a lingering attachment, we can help find them.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Call for professional talent<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

There are talent shortages in fields such as elderly care technology, education, and training<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On the display board of Rongheng (Shanghai) Vocational Skills Training Co., Ltd., teacher positions in two directions\u2014\u201cSenior Care Major\u201d and \u201cClinical Nursing Major\u201d\u2014were posted.<\/span>\u201cWhether it\u2019s elderly care or hospital caregiving, the demand for vocational skills training is huge, but there is a shortage of corresponding teachers.\u201d<\/span>Liu Renju, head of Rongheng Vocational Skills Training, said that the company currently has 6 full-time teachers, mainly post-2000s with nursing professional backgrounds.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
